Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Some Virulence-Associated Genes of Escherichia coli isolated from Migratory Quails in Marsa Matrouh Governorate, Egypt

Abstract
Migratory quail birds significantly influence zoonotic pathogens circulation, ecology, and transmission, particularly E. coli, which causes illnesses in both animals and humans, in addition to the occurrence of poultry industry severe losses. Consequently, the role of migratory quail birds along the Marsa Matrouh Governorate, Egypt in spreading of E. coli was assessed. One hundred and thirty migratory quail birds were hunted, then their fecal swabs were subjected to bacteriological analysis. In addition to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to investigate two virulence-encoding genes (papC and eaeA) and five resistant genes to antibiotic (Sul1, blaTEM, floR, TetA(A), and qnrB). One hundred and eight isolates of E. coli were recovered from 130 birds, representing 83% and showed the lowest resistant rates for norfloxacin (8.3%), nitrofurantoin (8.3%), amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (9.2%), and ciprofloxacin (12.9%), while demonstrating high resistance rates of 94.4% to tetracycline, 92.5% to chloramphenicol, 87% to penicillin, 86% to streptomycin, and 60% to nalidixic acid. Phylogenetic analysis of selected six isolates was revealed genetic diversity alongside close similarity to animal and human originating strains from different geographical regions. Our results highlight the migratory quail potential role in transmission of antibiotic-resistant E. coli, posing a critical importance in poultry industry and one health sector, So that continuous investigation and implementation of effective control strategies are strongly recommended.
