Abstract
There is a dearth of evidence regarding detorsion as a surgical management of testicular torsion in studies of experimental testicular damage in rabbits. We investigated histopathological changes, oxidative stress and antioxidant response to testicular ischaemia-reperfusion Injury following torsion. Ten (10) New Zealand male peripubertal rabbits (Mean Age: 4.6 ± 1.2 months; Mean Weight: 4.3 ± 0.6 kg) were randomly hand-picked (with five (5) in each) into two groups-A and B, equally. Group A was the control while Group B underwent left testicular torsion for 1 hour and detorsion for surgical correction. Testicular tissue samples of the affected testicle were analysed for histopathological changes, Malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx). Oedema and loss of interstitial spaces with coagulative necrosis, lobular segmentation and complete loss of architecture of seminiferous tubules were evident. There was a significant (P < 0.0001) decrease in SOD but a significant increase in MDA and GPx when compared to the control group. Surgical detorsion as correction for testicular torsion did not produce satisfactory outcome.

Key words: Surgical detorsion, ischaemia-reperfusion injury, oxidative stress, anti-oxidant, testicular torsion
