Abstract
Pituitary gland plays a significant role in regulating vital body functions and general wellbeing. The present study was carried out to study the histological structure of pituitary gland of camel and to recognize immunohistochemical expression for FSH (follicular stimulating hormone), GFAP (glial- fibrillary acidic protein) and S100 protein antibodies. Pituitary glands were extracted from ten adult camel heads, directly after slaughter from Zagazig abattoir. The specimens were fixed in 10% buffered neutral formalin then processed for histological and immunohistochemical examination. Result: In the present work, three different regions in the pituitary gland of camel were studied; pars distalis, pars intermedia and pars nervosa. The parenchyma of the pars distalis had three types of cells; large polygonal acidophils, smaller round basophils and pale chromophobes. The pars intermedia was a narrow zone that completely exists between the pars distalis and the pars nervosa. The latter was composed of neural tissue, containing unmyelinated axons, pituicytes and herring bodies were also seen. The immunohistochemical studies revealed that FSH antibody reactivity was obvious in pars distalis which detected in the cytoplasm of its cells. While, S100 protein expression was detected in pars distalis and pars nervosa. GFAP was expressed clearly in the pars nervosa whereas the expression was significantly decreased in other regions of this neural lobe. Conclusion: Three different regions in the pituitary gland of camel were identified; pars distalis, pars intermedia and pars nervosa. Cells positive for FSH, S100 protein and GFAP were identified with appropriate antibodies.

Key words: Camel, Pituitary gland, Immunohistochemistry
