The Impact of Supplementing Thymol, Eugenol, and their Combination into the Diet of Growing Rabbits on Growth Traits and Hematological Parameters under Heat Stress Conditions

Abstract
Heat stress poses significant challenges for rabbit production, affecting welfare, growth, and overall performance. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of dietary supplementation with thymol, eugenol, and their combination on the growth parameters and hematological parameters on growing heat stressed rabbits. Sixty weaned V-line rabbits, aged 35 days with an initial body weight of 654 ± 10 g were distributed into five groups: C- (control diet under thermoneutral conditions), C+ (control diet under heat stress), T (250 mg/kg thymol supplemented with the control diet under heat stress), E (250 mg/kg eugenol supplemented with the control diet under heat stress), and ET (250 mg/kg thymol + 250 mg/kg eugenol supplemented with the control diet under heat stress).The results revealed that both the thymol alone and thymol-eugenol mixture in rabbits' diet contributed to the highest body weight and weight gain, showing significant improvements during specific weeks of the trial due to their phytogenic substances properties (P<0.05). Moreover, the thymol-eugenol combination resulted in increased feed intake (P<0.001) in the heat-stressed groups, indicating a potential synergistic effect. Phytogenic supplementation effectively enhanced WBCs count, neutrophil, and lymphocyte percentage, alongside the restoration of MCV, MCH, and RDW-SD values to levels similar to those of non-stressed rabbits. In conclusion, dietary phytogenic compounds in thymol and eugenol could mitigate the harmful effect of heat stress in growing rabbits
