Abstract
Corneal disorders represent a leading cause of visual impairment in domestic cats, often requiring prompt diagnosis and specialized therapeutic management. This retrospective analysis encompassed 62 feline corneal disorder cases, extracted from a total of 100 documented ocular presentations at veterinary clinics in Alexandria, Damietta and Damanhour, Egypt, over a three-year period spanning December 2021 to December 2024. Corneal ulceration emerged as the most prevalent condition, affecting 35.48% of cases, followed by feline corneal sequestrum (20.96%) and herpetic keratitis (14.51%). Age demonstrated a statistically significant association with the occurrence of corneal disorders (p < 0.001), with the highest prevalence observed in cats aged 1 to <3 years (32.25%). A similarly significant correlation was found between breed and disease distribution (p < 0.001), with Persian cats comprising the largest proportion of affected cases (24.19%), likely attributable to breed-specific anatomical and genetic predispositions. In contrast, sex was not significantly associated with corneal disease occurrence (p = 0.143), although a higher proportion of cases was recorded in males (56.45%) compared to females (43.55%). Furthermore, treatment modality was significantly influenced by disease severity (p < 0.001), with 48.39% of cases managed medically and 51.61% requiring surgical intervention. Medical therapies included topical antibiotics, antivirals, and epithelial support agents. Surgical procedures such as lamellar keratectomy, amniotic membrane grafting, and conjunctival flaps were essential in managing complex cases, including sequestrum, bullous keratopathy, and descemetoceles. These findings emphasize the need for early intervention, breed-specific vigilance, and tailored treatment strategies to optimize clinical outcomes in feline corneal diseases.
